Can Businesses Use ChatGPT for Free?
Yes, the free plan of ChatGPT provides access to the main features like the latest GPT-4o model, image generation, voice mode, web search, document analysis and the GPT store.
Limitations
The usage of the GPT-4o model is limited in the free plan. After you consume the free usage ChatGPT will switch to the cheaper and less capable model GPT-4o-mini which is sufficient for most tasks but performs worse in complex problem solving compared to the bigger model. There is also a usage cap on the number of images ChatGPT will generate with their engine DALL-E. You can use the GPT store to use all the available GPTs with a usage cap but you are not able to create your own custom GPTs. The limits reset after a while and you can use the features again. The app will notify you about the wait time.
Paid Plan
The paid version is called ChatGPT Plus and costs $20 per month. It comes with 5x higher usage for the GPT-4o model, an advanced voice mode and the option to create custom GPTs. There’s also a team plan available for $25 per month per user.
OpenAI also provides API access to their models. In order to use the API you need to login to the developer platform with your account and deposit money onto it. A token is a piece of a word or character that the model processes. It can be a full word, part of a word, or even punctuation. The model breaks text into tokens, which it uses to understand and generate language. As you will notice over time the accuracy of the output it produces can fluctuate. Usually the output needs some editing before you can use it. ChatGPT is perfect for brainstorming, outlining topics, and writing drafts. You should make the content yours by adding your style to it.

Regarding security and privacy OpenAI might use your content to train and improve their models. You can opt-out and withdraw your allowance in the settings under the data controls tab. Besides that you should never input sensitive or protected data. Always modify the prompt and data sources and replace private data with some demo data.
If you want to have the full amount of privacy you need to deploy an open-source model on your own server. This is a feasible option. Llama-3 with the Ollama framework is a popular choice, for example.
